Dinner

Guess who cooked dinner tonight?!?! That's right, ME! And no, it wasn't maggi mee or macaroni and cheese or boiled egg. Hmph. You people have no belief in my cooking skills. Okay, so I had (a lot) of help from my dad and my maid, Yuli. Oh, and Jamie Oliver, the guy who inspired the recipe. The original recipe was for "Roast Loin of Pork with Peaches".

We went to Megamall to buy the ingredients. We had to go to four, FOUR different places and NONE OF THEM had the piece of meat we were looking for, which was basically a roll of meat around the ribs. They either had
a) just the ribs, no roll
b) just the roll, in slices
c) the piece we wanted, but cooked
d) no non-halal meat at all

In the end, we settled for pork knuckle. Not the ideal piece, but it still turned out AWESOME. Recipe called for peaches, parsnips, potatoes, artichokes and celeriac but we changed it to peaches, pumpkin, parsnips and big white onion. What you're basically supposed to do is cut the meat around the bone and stuff peaches into the hole that you'd created, then cover it up with butter. I'd filled that knuckle till it was OVERFLOWING. Peaches, butter, everything was squashed inside. So I mean, hello, I expect to see peaches in the meat when I finally open it up right? Nope. I think they all shrivelled up and died inside the roaster. Anyway, they contributed flavour to the meat. You know how sometimes, when you have roast pork, the meat is a bit tough and the crackling's unchewable? Well, this one was just perfect. Seriously (Head not kembang-ing, just telling the truth). Omigosh, it was be-yeu-tee-ful. The pumpkins and onions went really well with the pork. The parsnips on the other hand were a bit overdone. Expensive too. Not using them the next time I do this.

The thing about me or any of my own immediate family cooking is that we tend to leave the cooking a little late, so we end up eating really late. CTMC's bugged me about this before, telling me it's unhealthy to eat so late, just before you sleep, bla bla bla. But who cares? It was well worth waiting for today. Ate at 10 pm.

Anyway, no pictures, it was eaten too fast ;-) More posts the next time I cook.
